Graduating Senior Spotlight

The Department of Languages and Literatures wishes its graduating seniors the best as they apply for jobs and begin the exciting transition to the next chapter of their lives! They generously shared their favorite memories of being a major in the department and their post-graduation plans.

Belle Ayala

I originally came to Ashland University as a music education major in pursuit of my passion for leadership and vocal performance. I do not regret this decision; however, I knew that, while music is and forever will be my favorite thing in life, I knew that I was destined to teach a different form of literature. Thus, I switched to Integrated Language Arts Education.

So here I am, 5 years later! Better late than never. Though I am very excited to finally walk across the stage, it’s such a bittersweet departure. Ashland has grown significantly, and I am so honored to have been a part and a witness of that growth. Ashland has become a part of me, and I have the community to thank for who I have become today.

Throughout the years, I wore so many hats at Ashland University that it’s hard to recall them all. I have performed on and run the Hugo Young and Studio Theaters for all 5 years, as well as served as an Aspiring Educators member for 3, the AE-editor for 1, resident assistant for 2, a nest worker for 2.5, a presidential intern for 1, a Writing and Communications coach for 2, a percussionist in the AU marching band and orchestra for 3, a University choir member for 5, Chamber Singers member for 2, choir band secretary for 1 (each), a Drop of a Hat secretary and vice president for 1 (each), a Sigma Tau Delta member for 2, Alpha Psi Omega member for 4… AND worked two jobs at any given time. Anyone who has known my college journey knows that I was never NOT busy. I loved it that way, though!

Through all of these experiences, I have been able to meet and connect with some of the most amazing people that Ashland has to offer, from faculty to students. I have engaged with some of the coolest literature and ideas, as well as gained so much knowledge that I am sure (and have already begun) to use in the future as I go into the real world.

I will always look back at my 5 years at Ashland University with great fondness. Being a part of the Languages and Literatures department has been nothing short of a joy and a privilege, and I will forever be thankful for all of the beautiful memories I have made here!

Thank you for pushing me to be the best version of myself I could be!

Hannah Coon

When I first came to Ashland University, I was studying early childhood education. After taking just one English course, however, I quickly changed my major to Integrated Language Arts. Since then, time has flown by remarkably quickly! I can hardly believe that four years have passed already. My time within this program has been nothing short of positive, and I’ve met friends that I know will be by my side for life.

Whether it was reading works from Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway or Sir Thomas Mallory, I have come to love reading and writing even more (something which I didn’t think was possible!) I have truly learned not only how to dive even deeper into texts and how to close read, but also how to share my love of reading and literature with my students. I am forever grateful for all of the amazing friendships, memories and opportunities this program has brought me!
