Dr. Maura Grady Plays Key Role in Shawshank 30th Anniversary Celebration

Dr. Maura Grady

From Aug. 10-13, Dr. Maura Grady, Associate Professor of English and Director of Composition/Accent on Communicating, participated in the events of the thirtieth anniversary of the classic film, The Shawshank Redemption, at several locations in Ohio, including The Ohio State Reformatory (aka Shawshank Prison in Mansfield) and The Shawshank Woodshop (Upper Sandusky).

Dr. Grady is giving a tour to a group including Shawshank Redemption’s production supervisor Sue Bea Montgomery, location supervisor Kokayi Ampah, and other members of the production team (and friends). For some, it was their first time back in 31 years!

As Board President of the nonprofit Ohio State Reformatory (mrps.org), Dr. Grady helped to welcome visitors who included the film's director/screenwriter Frank Darabont, members of the production staff, principal cast and other cast and crew. She also supervised the collection of survey data from visiting fans, the fourth such survey she has conducted. Her research on Shawshank and affiliation with the Historic Reformatory has already resulted in several publications, including the 2016 Palgrave/Macmillan book, The Shawshank Experience: Tracking the History of the World's Favorite Movie. More information about the thirtieth anniversary can be found at shawshanktrail.com.
